Humane World for Animals Responds to Hurricane Melissa, Delivering Urgent Relief to Jamaica’s Animals

Our Canadian disaster response team on the ground in Jamaica.

Humane World for Animals (formerly Humane Society International) has launched an animal relief effort in Jamaica to provide urgent care for animals affected by Hurricane Melissa. Our Canadian disaster response team is on the ground, delivering crucial supplies including animal food, medicines, pet carriers and equipment to support local shelters and communities in the aftermath of the storm.

Gaia Bonini, Director of International Disaster response at Humane World for Animals and lead for the Jamaica deployment, described the situation as “almost beyond comprehension.”

“The level of destruction here is staggering, and we know we’ve only seen a fraction of it so far,” Bonini said. “Entire buildings have been blown away, trees and power lines block the roads, and twisted metal signs line the streets. Many communities are cut off and will feel the impact of this devastation for a long time. There is little infrastructure or aid available for the countless animals who have also suffered. Some shelters remain completely isolated—without food, power, clean water, or basic supplies. Our focus is on helping animals in crisis and bringing comfort to the people who care for them. We’re deeply honoured to stand alongside the communities of Jamaica in their time of need.”

Rebecca Aldworth, Executive Director of Humane World for Animals Canada, is in Jamaica as part of the disaster response team.

“Canada and Jamaica share a special bond, and our hearts are with the people of Jamaica as they rebuild in the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa,” Aldworth said. “The devastation here is immense, but so is the courage and resilience of the communities coming together to recover. We’re proud to stand alongside local organizations to help care for the many animals affected by this tragedy. Our work involves not only urgent, on-the-ground relief, but also long-term support to rebuild infrastructure and prevent the spread of disease. Helping animals recover means helping communities heal.”

Humane World for Animals is working with two animal shelters in Jamaica - Negril Pup Rescue, which is caring for 90 animals, and Montego Bay Animal Haven, which is caring for 130. The team has already delivered food and essential supplies to both shelters and is now coordinating larger shipments to support their continued efforts.

The team is also preparing for a mass veterinary clinic at Negril Pup Rescue, in which examinations, vaccinations and updated veterinary records will be provided for all the animals. This initiative will help ensure that animals affected by the hurricane get the care they need now and in the weeks to come.

Through every disaster, Humane World for Animals remains committed to more than just immediate relief. By supporting communities, providing care for animals, and investing in long-term recovery, the organization helps restore hope, resilience, and a future where both people and animals can thrive, even after the most challenging crises.
